How Vitamin C Removes Chlorine in Shower Water and Why SUHAE Is More Than Just a Filter

Quick answer: Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, reduces the chlorine left in treated tap water and converts it into chloride, a far less reactive form of the same element. Most people who go looking for this answer have already changed cleanser, already bought the heavier body lotion, already been told to turn the temperature down. Water tends to be the last variable anyone examines. It arrives clear, it meets every published standard, and nothing about it looks like a suspect.

What is actually in Singapore shower water

PUB publishes a water quality summary each year. For January to December 2025, the reported average chlorine level was 2.27 mg/L, across a range of 1.43 to 2.87 mg/L. Monochloramine averaged 2.10 mg/L. Total hardness averaged 42.7 mg/L, which sits comfortably in the soft band, so the widespread assumption that Singapore runs hard water does not survive PUB’s own measurements. Average pH was 8.0.

The chloramine number is the one that matters for skin contact. PUB states it directly: “Ammonia is added to the treated water to form chloramines, a more stable chlorine residual.” Stable is the operative word. A residual engineered to survive the pipe network is a residual that is still there when water leaves your shower head. That is a public health feature working as intended. It also explains why a disinfectant meant for kilometres of pipework ends up on your forearms every evening, which is the part most explanations of tap water treatment leave out.

The mechanism: how vitamin C neutralises chlorine

Chlorine is an oxidiser. Chemically, that means it is looking for electrons, and it takes them from whatever it meets first. In a water main that is bacteria. In a shower that is whatever is on the surface of your skin and hair.

Ascorbic acid is a reducing agent, which is the opposite job. It donates electrons readily. When the two meet, the reactive chlorine species pick up what they were looking for and become chloride ions, the same benign form of chlorine found in table salt and in your own blood plasma. The reaction happens in the water, not on your skin, and it happens quickly enough to be useful at shower flow rates.

Compare that with activated carbon, which works by adsorption. Carbon holds contaminants on its surface until the surface is full. It is a good technology with a real limit, and it is one reason to understand what the materials inside a cartridge are each doing before choosing one. A chemical conversion behaves differently from a physical trap. Neither removes everything, and any product that claims to should be read sceptically.

The objection: PUB water is safe, so why filter it

This is the right question to ask, and it deserves an honest answer rather than a scare. Singapore tap water meets WHO guidelines. It is safe to drink straight from the tap. Nothing on this page argues otherwise.

The distinction is narrower than the marketing usually admits. Safe to drink is a standard built around ingestion. It is not the same standard as optimal for ten minutes of daily skin contact at 40 degrees. Those are different exposures with different durations and different surface areas, and drinking water regulations were never written to answer the second one.

The published evidence is also narrower than most claims. Seki and colleagues, writing in the Journal of Dermatology in 2003, found that chlorine at 1.0 and 2.0 mg/L significantly reduced stratum corneum hydration in patients with atopic dermatitis. That is a real finding in a specific group. It has not been shown for the general population, and extending it there would be dishonest. Perkin and colleagues, in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in 2016, looked at water and eczema risk in infancy and concluded that chlorine’s influence “remains uncertain”. Uncertain is what the literature says, so uncertain is what we say.

Who this is for, and who it is not for

Worth considering if you shower twice daily in Singapore’s climate, if your skin feels tight within a few minutes of towelling off, if you have coloured or chemically treated hair, or if you already know your skin reacts to pool water. Also worth considering if you have noticed a distinct chlorine note in an enclosed bathroom with poor ventilation.

Not for you if you are looking for a treatment. Filtration is not medicine and no shower head should be sold as one. If you have persistent eczema, dermatitis or scalp disease, see a doctor first and treat water as a comfort variable at most. Also skip it if your main complaint is weak flow with no skin issue, since pressure problems usually have a plumbing cause that a cartridge will not fix. And if the honest answer is that your skin feels fine, it probably does not need solving.

This is also when replacement discipline starts to matter, and cartridge life in a humid climate is shorter than the packaging on most imported filters assumes. Run the water for a few seconds before stepping in, keep the temperature moderate, and improve ventilation if your bathroom has none.

Does a vitamin C filter remove all chlorine from shower water?
No. It helps neutralise the residual chlorine it contacts. No point-of-use filter removes everything, and any claim to the contrary is worth distrusting.

Does it work on chloramine as well as free chlorine?
Chloramine is more stable than free chlorine, which is exactly why PUB uses it, and it is correspondingly more stubborn to treat. Ascorbic acid acts on it, though a stable compound will always be harder work than an unstable one.

Will vitamin C in the water do anything for my skin directly?
